I won a Liebster Award

A Lister Award you say?

Oh.... a Liebster Award.

Chris at the superb Sippin' on Paint Water has very kindly nominated me for a Liebster Award. Like him I had heard vague rumours and glimpsed sightings of this mythical beast, but wasn't entirely sure what it was.
Essentially, in marketing speak, it seems to be a community-given award to further promote small to medium blogs :P Actually, it seems like a ruddy good idea.

So, here are the rules, courtesy of Chris:-

1. Copy and paste the award on your blog linking it to the blogger who has given it you.

2. Pass the award to your top 5 favorite blogs with less than 200 followers by leaving a comment on one of there posts to notify them that they have won the award and listing them on your own blog.

3. Sit back and bask in the warm fuzzy feeling that comes with knowing you have made someone's day!

4. There is no obligation to pass this onto someone else but its nice if you take the time to do so.

So here it goes. This was a very difficult choice, there's many other bloody brilliant blogs out there that I read regularly.

And the Liebster Award goes to...

The Thunder Guard
Possibly posessing the largest collection of Praetorians in the Universe, good ol' Col. Ackland showcases some of his beautiful conversions (particularly love the cavalry and the naval chaps) and increasingly some nifty fluff.

Devos IV
Zzzzzz has a great mix of articles, always thoughtful and amusing, particularly the most recent ones on the "human resources" of a Space Marine Chapter (just my cup of tea).

A Downward Spyrle
If you want to see some great terrain and scenery, check out Kevin's blog for inspiration.

13th Praetorian Imperial Guard Regiment
Buffer has some beautiful forest-green Praetorians here (a nice 19th centruy light infantry vibe), and the accompanying forest bases are simple but very effective!

For Dark Ages wargaming galore, some great battle reports and possibly the most gorgeously coverted and painted Welsh and British Kingdoms miniatures there are - a great inspiration for my Spears of Mawdryn - check out Andy's blog.

Dai, the Welshman across the Atlantic has a fine array of retro goodness and like many here has been a good supporter of my blog since the earliest days.

Honourable Mention

Warp Signal
James is an honourable mention because I know Frontline Gamer has already awarded him a Liebster. Again James' articles cover a wide range of topics and are always insightful and amusing, he has some Iybraesil Eldar that I want to steal, and his was the first wargaming blog I really started reading - so it's his fault you have to put up with my waffle.

Maths was never my strong point...

  2. Many fanks. Quite chuffed.

I was looking at the back catalogue of Spears of Mawdyn posts and found the one about Org and Det. Rob a copy of the Space Wolf codex off of some poor unsuspecting child (or, less safisfyingly but more legally and morally better, get one off e-bay or for Christmas). I think that the SW Codex might be better for the SoW than the Vanilla SM Codex. I could see them as more of a great company than a Coy.

Also struck by the idea of their arch rivals, the Swords of Wotan, who would of cause, be the same but the different. (same inits did it for me) Now, where's my Visigoth dictionary ?

    1. Thanks Zzzzzz, I did toy with using Space Wolves in the early days, but there are a few things that don't quite fit so I thought that a custom codex is probably the best way forward. They're organised into Teulu which are essentially Great Companies, the Rune Priests and Wolf Priests have similar equivalents in the Mawdryn Chapter (and that one was completely coincidental), so there's definitely a case there. I really need to upload the most recent fluff, as I don't think I've actually put that much up here at all.

I avoided having any Saxon opponents as I didn't want to copy the parallel too far, although a fellow gamer's Chapter is somewhat Norman and typically snooty Marines so there's a bit of friction between the two Chapters there.

  4. Ha ha! Red Dwarf, I normally don't get British TV references.

  5. Congratulations on the award. The medical transfer sheet is looking very fine. Shame about the Lister Award though....heaven know's what the prize would be for that!

  6. Many thanks gents, all your blogs are more than deserving of one. Scipio has yet to pick his nominees but he's off swimming in the North Sea at stupid o'clock at the moment, bloody daft idea for a holiday :P

Chris, excellent! I do tend to litter almost every post with British comedy references so my apologies, I often have whole conversations in "Alan Partridge quotes" so I must stop doing that...

Sidney, hmmm I think a can of lager and a vindaloo would be the prize that springs to mind, but maybe that's a bit obvious. I'm not sure what it would be awarded for though... Any suggestions?!

  7. Headologist thanks very much for the award! Apologies for the late reply, I was jazzing up my blog yesterday in response to winning such an illustrious award! I'll have to work out who to pass it on to......

  8. Hey thanks! That is very very kind of you! Warm fuzziness all round.
As side note on my collection of Praetorians - in one of my previous posts I said that I thought there were more then 500 of the little chaps, well I actually pulled them all out and counted them the other day.... over 800 Praetorians, and several hundred Mordians, Valhallans, ratlings, stormtoopers, etc etc etc... all up around the 1500 mark. So if I paint one to two hundred a year I can start a new army in 10 years or so. LOL. If I could bring myself to sell them I could buy a newer car!

I am continuously blown away by your art work. What software do you use?

    1. You're welcome. I would love to see them all painted up, even if it takes over a decade :P

I'm afraid it's just a hodge podge of Flash for most of the drawing and then a free piece of software called Magix Photo Editor to put everything together. Occasionally I use GIMP for things (most unfortunate name ever) as it can leave cleaner results. I've used and liked both Photoshop and Paintshop Pro in the past and both make life even easier, but I'm waiting for a kindly donor to get me a licence for those lol
